BACALAR, MEXICO

Bacalar is a charming town near the Mexico-Belize border in Quintana Roo, Mexico’s Caribbean state. The town of Bacalar sits on shores of the lake of the same name, Lake Bacalar or Laguna de Bacalar, which is famous for its striking blue, turquoise and green waters, earning it the nickname "Lagoon of Seven Colors." Bacalar is a nature lover’s paradise. It offers a laid-back atmosphere with beautiful views, breathtaking sunsets, and plenty of opportunities to swim in cenotes and the lagoon.

Bacalar is perfect for visitors looking for a  tranquil escape, it offers natural beauty and outdoor activities, making it ideal for travelers seeking relaxation or adventure.

The town is a hidden gem that offers an off-the-beaten-path experience, different from the crowded destinations of Cancun and Playa del Carmen. Located approximately 214 miles (345km) south of Cancun, it takes around 4-5 hours to travel to Bacalar. It is an idyllic escape for travelers who are looking to relax by crystal-clear waters, explore cenotes, and experience authentic Mexican culture. This town is perfect for nature enthusiasts and those interested in wellness or adventure. Bacalar’s picturesque lagoon is the main attraction, but there’s plenty more to see and do in the area.

Bacalar, located along Mexico’s Caribbean coast, doesn’t have the typical white sand beaches. Instead, there are docks that provide access to the lagoon’s crystal-clear waters, perfect for swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, or simply relaxing by the shore. The lagoon’s stunning range of colors, from pale turquoise to deep blue, is the result of sunlight interacting with its shallow, sandy bottom, as well as variations in depth and the presence of minerals and microorganisms.

The lagoon is a freshwater lake surrounded by lush vegetation, it was formed through ancient geological processes and the mineral-rich groundwater of the Yucatan Peninsula. Its waters feature cenotes and varying depths, which, when illuminated by the sun, create impressive color contrasts.

The best way to fully experience the lagoon and its beauty is on a boat trip, and you can be guided around the lagoon, and learn more about the history and nature of the area. These trips often take visitors to key points such as the Pirate’s Channel (El Canal de los Piratas), Cenote Negro, and Bird Island, as well as other spots.

Other points of interest in the area include Cenote Azul, a natural sinkhole that is perfect for a refreshing swim, it is located just a short distance from the town. Close by is also the attraction of Los Rapidos, a spot known for its natural water currents and rapids, where you can spend a fun day. This natural lazy river allows you to float down gentle currents of the lagoon. In the town you can also explore the town’s fort, Fuerte de San Felipe, a small 18th century fort which once protected the town from pirates, which now houses a museum, and boasts incredible views across the lagoon. Bacalar is also home to a variety of bird species and local wildlife, making it a great destination for those interested in eco-tourism and wildlife observation.

While Bacalar doesn’t have a bustling nightlife scene like the coast’s bigger cities like Cancun and Playa del Carmen, it offers a variety of restaurants and bars that provide a relaxed atmosphere, some with stunning views of the lagoon. There are many cafes, as well as beach clubs, which are restaurants with docks that you can usually swim from, and take part in other activities.

Bacalar is an increasingly popular destination, this safe town, its lagoon, nature, and  history, as well as its relaxed vibe make it a perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of Mexico’s Caribbean cities. Whether kayaking across the lagoon or exploring historical landmarks, Bacalar invites you to slow down, connect with nature, and discover a unique side of Mexico.
